Mobile Medical Unit - "Whittier on Wheels"

The Whittier Institute’s Mobile Medical Unit brings diabetes education and care to the community.

Mobile Medical Unit - Inaugurated in February 2004, this unique resource is designed to replicate services usually offered only in doctors’ offices, bringing them directly to the community. The Mobile Medical Unit (MMU) provides diabetes screening, general diabetes prevention and management information, and referrals to additional Whittier resources, including the Scripps Whittier Diabetes Program and Project Dulce.

This custom 40-foot motor coach features clinical care facilities, including two examination rooms, a retinal camera, and other advanced medical equipment. A plasma marquee displays diabetes statistics and information, while a team of clinical care professionals deliver services.

The unit also offers access to clinical research trials to people who might not otherwise be able to participate. As a result, individuals can enhance their knowledge of the disease, leading to improved communication with their physicians, as well as contributing to the development of advanced treatments.
