Nutrition Guidelines

The first step in maintaining ideal blood sugar levels is keeping close management of diet and exercise. The goal is to achieve the right balance of protein, carbohydrate and fat needed to maintain normal blood glucose necessary for good blood sugar control and to advert complications. Suggestions to get started include:

Diabetes Management through Diet & Exercise
  1. Control portion sizes, especially foods high in carbohydrates
  2. Eat meals and snacks at regular times – do not skip meals
  3. Limit concentrated sweets and sugar. Be a sugar detective— Check the ingredient list on food labels for these words, indicating that the product contains sugar or added sugar: sucrose, corn syrup, fructose, corn sweeteners, dextrose, natural sweeteners, molasses, maltose, modified food starch, honey. Also, use sugar substitutes in moderation.
  4. Choose high-fiber foods for example, whole grains, oat bran, dried beans, peas, fresh fruit and vegetables
  5. Eat less fat, especially minimize high-fat meat and dairy products
  6. Achieve and maintain a healthy weight– if overweight, even losing 10 –20 pounds can improve diabetes control
  7. Exercise at least 4 – 5 times a week
