Patient Program Overview

The Whittier administers one of the largest American Diabetes Association-recognized patient education programs in the nation - offering every person with diabetes a program specialized to meet their individual needs.

Diabetes team management is the key component of the Scripps Whittier Diabetes Program , which believes people with diabetes should be able to enjoy life to the fullest. Using a comprehensive team approach, through 7 outpatient and 5 inpatient sites, the program provides over 10,000 adults with the information and support needed for newly diagnosed or “veteran” patients with type 1 or type 2, and women with gestational diabetes. This program is open to everyone, not just Scripps Health patients.

Project Dulce is a unique outreach effort that specifically focuses on the underserved populations. Available through 8 sites throughout San Diego, this program serves 2,000 patients and is considered a model program by the former United States Department of Health and Human Services. Project Dulce is a collaboration between The Whittier, San Diego Community Health Improvement Partners, and the San Diego Council of Community Clinics.

Pediatric patients, both with type 1 and type 2 diabetes, receive education at The Whittier Children’s Diabetes Center at Children’s Hospital, San Diego. The Whittier serves as a catalyst for bringing important programs to the youngest patients living with diabetes in the region.
